MUNICIPALITY OF VALDAGNO PUBLIC LIBRARY
V.le Regina Margherita, 1

What’s more important than the formation of a free, independent human being, able to decide autonomously and to play an active role in society?
To reach this goal satisfactory instruction, as well as a free, limitless access to knowledge, thought, culture and information are necessary.
Furthermore, besides school, which institution is more adapt than the library to find the entry to the documentary universe and to the necessary information for the most different human activities?
The PUBLIC LIBRARY is a fundamental centre for the development of ideas, the satisfaction of curiosity, the research of information and the collection of these put together.
The Public Library of Valdagno opened in 1959 at Palazzo Festari. In 1968 it moved to the top floor of the Municipal Hall and in 1970 moved again to the first floor of Palazzo Festari, with about 9.000 books. In 1978 the Municipal archives were transferred to the Public Library rooms too. The Public Library moved to the actual position in July 1983, thanks to the donation of Villa Valle by the Marzotto family. There were about 17.000 books. In 1992, with about 27.000 books, the computerisation and the unified catalogation of books began. In 1997 the first internet emplacement was activated. Now the Public Library buys about 2.500 new books a year and has about 75.000 books, but the librarian cooperation allows us to have a virtual library of about 1.000.000 books available, which can be exchanged through the twice-weekly service of bibliobus.
Villa Valle, which was given by Marzotto family to the Municipality of Valdagno to remember Count Gaetano, is, together with Palazzo Nanti, Palazzo Festari, Palazzo Mastini, Palazzo Bocchese and S. Clemente presbytery, one of the highest artistic level architectural expressions of historic Valdagno and one of the best monuments in the Agno valley.
The Public Library belongs to everybody and can offer useful information and services: consider the businessman, who wants to see the latest laws about job safety, or the keen gardener, who wants to know what to do with a particular flower, or the housewife, who would like to find a new menu for a special dinner, or the student, who has to enter a university exam by e-mail, or the employee, who wants to read newspapers or magazines, or the professional man, who would like to conslut an encyclopedia or a data base on cd-rom; the historian, who wants to find news about local history, or the child, who is beginning to read or the pensioner, who wants to read without exertion, or the teacher, who’s searching for something for a particular school activity, the shopkeeper, who has to know something about marketing and window dressing. Let’s consider each of us, with the desire to satisfy the pleasure of reading.
The Public Library offers all this and much more, not least the occasion to meet other people and to have a quiet place available where one can feel at ease.
In the Public Library it’s important to respect other people. As a consequence of this, in the Public Library you have to speak under voice, to move without haste, not to hinder the passage and to use with care all the instruments wich are at your disposal.
